Research commissioned by the St Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB), revealing that of the more than £4bn spent in the UK each year on wedding gifts, £118m is wasted on unwanted presents, has prompted the launch of a wedding gift conversion tool on the SLTB’s UK website which enables visitors to see comparisons of the cost of popular wedding gifts with St Lucian experiences carrying a similar price tag.
With St Lucia being a favourite wedding and honeymoon destination for UK couples, the SLTB undertook research into couples’ attitudes towards wedding presents, and also looked at wedding list creation trends. The survey found that 20% of couples these days ask for cash rather than gifts, so that they can pay for unique experiences while honeymooning.
The new wedding gift converter at www.saintlucianow.co.uk/weddinggifts shows visitors the value of their unwanted wedding gifts – things like expensive candles, vases and other luxury items that may never be used, or worse, end up being sold on sites like ebay – compared to the cost of a range of popular activities that couples can enjoy on their honeymoon, like a romantic St Lucia sunset cruise or whale and dolphin spotting trips.
Louis Lewis, Director of Tourism, SLTB, said: “Our research revealed an increasing trend in couples looking for unique and memorable gifts and experiences that will make their honeymoon time together really stand out. Saint Lucia offers an incredible array of unforgettable experiences for honeymooners and the memory of a champagne sunset cruise or a whale watching trip will stay with you much longer than a pasta making machine or a king-size duvet set.”
